How We Research

We earn a commission when you buy through some links on this site, at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

Every buying guide on Price & Cost follows the same process, so you can judge how much weight to give it.

1. Start with the real price

We check the brand's own store and major retailers for the current list price, the usual sale price, shipping costs and what is included in the box. Prices move often, so every guide carries the date it was last updated.

2. Read the fine print

Warranty length, return windows, subscription requirements and replacement-part costs often matter more than the headline price. We look them up and spell them out.

3. Look for the complaints

Spec sheets show what a product should do. Owner reviews, forums, support threads and complaint sites show what goes wrong. We summarize the recurring problems in every guide.

4. Compare like with like

We compare products on the numbers that decide the purchase, such as capacity per dollar for power stations or fabric and warranty for furniture, and we say who each one suits.

What we do not do

  • We do not accept payment for placement or for positive coverage.
  • We do not claim hands-on tests we have not done; when a guide is based on research rather than our own testing, it says so.
  • We do not invent ratings, awards or prices.
